Sky Nook: defending the quiet, one word at a time

Not everything I build is for work. I made Sky Nook as a gift for my wife, Kieran, who still playtests it for fun—an original, browser-based word game with its own story, art, and music, and a Cloudflare backend that serves up a fresh challenge every day.

It stars Sky, an introvert who just wants to read in peace, and the Puffies: a trio of impossibly cute monsters who keep rolling up to her treehouse to chat. Your job is to help her keep the quiet.

The whole game in one rule. Each wave hands you a few letters—say, f-i-s—and a Puffy marching toward the treehouse. Type any word that keeps those letters in order (fish, first, fistful) and press enter to send the Puffy packing. Easy to learn, weirdly hard to put down.

Meet Sky. She’s an introvert who’d rather be lost in a good book—on a quiet path, in her treehouse nook, anywhere the world goes still. The whole game is really about protecting that feeling.

The three Puffies—a pink cherry, a purple monster wearing headphones, and a green one—walking through a lightning storm

Meet the Puffies. They aren't evil—just relentlessly social. They keep rolling up to chat and stealing Sky's quiet, and they get faster and bolder as the waves climb. When her peace breaks, even the weather notices: clear skies curdle into lightning.

Win back the calm. Clear the waves and the storm lifts—Sky gets her nook, her music, and her aurora-lit night back. It's a small game, but every detail, from the lo-fi soundtrack to the daily word list, is built to feel cozy.

Built for the love of it

Sky Nook is the kind of thing I build when no one's asking me to—a gift that turned into a complete, shipped product: original art and music, escalating waves, daily, endless, and timed Storm Surge modes, worldwide leaderboards, and a Cloudflare backend that serves a new challenge every day, all wrapped around one good, simple idea. After decades of building software, the itch to make something delightful hasn't gone anywhere.
